Tax hikes take toll on Greeks' beloved ouzo

Consumption of country’s favorite drink falls, hurting bars and distilleries

ATHENS: It’s Friday night and Toni, 50, is sitting alone at his local bar in Athens pouring himself an ouzo from a half-empty bottle.

“Before, my friends used to go out. It’s the money,” he says splashing an ice cube into the glass and watching the liquid turn cloudy. “But I’m not married, I have no children so I don’t care.”
