Greece: 4th most expensive country in the EU-27 for alcoholic beverages

According to Eurostat, Greece remains on the list of most expensive countries in the alcoholic drinks (spirits, beer, wine) in 2020, which: 

• ranks 4th of the EU-27 Members States
• ranked 7th including non-EU countries.

Specifically, Greece is 36.8 % above the European average (with a price level index of 136,8 ). Greece also remains quite high compared to the tourist competitive countries in the south, such as Spain (with a price level index of 89,1), Cyprus (103,4), Italy (103,8), Portugal (105,9) and France (100,8). 
In addition, taxes (VAT, excise duty) have a very significant share of the ‘expensive’ alcoholic beverage prices, which significantly increase the final price of alcoholic drink to the consumer. 
It should be noted that in alcoholic beverages 51% of the final price of a typical spirit drink is covered by excise duty (approximately 1/3) and VAT.

The results show that the price of alcoholic drinks was the highest in Finland (with a price level index of 192,7), followed by Ireland (180,7) and Sweden (165,7). In contrast, the price levels for alcoholic drinks were the lowest in Hungary (with a price level index of 72,7) followed by Balkan countries, Romania (73,8), North Macedonia (76,2), Bosnia and Herzegovina (76,6) and Bulgaria (80,5).
