Greece one of the most expensive countries in Europe in alcoholic beverages (Eurostat 2022)
According to recent data from Eurostat, the prices of alcoholic beverages (spirits, beer, wine) in 2022 in Greece are at particularly high levels.
Greece:
- is in 3rd place out of 27 EU Member States.
- ranks 6th out of 36 countries (including both EFTA/European Free Trade Association countries, Western Balkan countries, and Turkey)
Greece is the third most expensive country in the EU-27 in alcoholic beverages with a price level index of 153.3 (53.3% higher than the European average), which is obviously explained by the very high excise duty applicable in our country and VAT, which significantly increase the cost for the final consumer. As we have pointed out, in alcoholic beverages, 51% of the final price of a typical alcoholic beverage is covered by excise duty (about 1/3) and VAT.
The table also shows that Greece remains quite high compared to tourist competitive countries such as Cyprus (with a price level index of 115), France (100.1), Spain (97.8) and Italy (89.3)
In 2022, the price level for alcohol drinks was more than two and a half times higher in the most expensive Member State compared to the cheapest.
The most expensive in alcoholic beverages is Finland with a price level index of 214.2 (114.2%higher than the European average), followed by Ireland with a price level index of 210.7, Greece in third place and in forth and in fifth place Sweden (with 151.8) and Denmark (with 144.6)
The lowest price levels for alcohol drinks were recorded in Hungary with 81.8 (18% below the EU average), Austria with 83.8 (-16% of the average) and Germany with 86.9 (-13% of the average).
