“Geographical indications in recipes: Travel without leaving your kitchen and discover European quality products"
European food and drink reflect the continent’s cultural diversity and rich lands. EU geographical indication schemes protect specific know how, authenticity and agro-environmental conditions.
The European Commission has launched a campaign about promotion of Geographical Indications (GI), Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) through Facebook, Twitter (#InspiredbyGIs), and youtube. The main theme of the campaign is “Geographical indications in recipes: Travel without leaving your kitchen and discover European quality products with mouth-watering recipes, giving centre stage to sought-after delicacies in your cooking.” The campaign presents short videos with recipes from PGI, PDO, GE products created by distinguished chefs.
Specifically, the campaign presents products from Greece (Fava Santorinis-PDO), Cyprus (Loukoumi Geroskipou-PGI), Estonia (Estonian Vodka-GI), Italy (Riso Nano Vialone Veronese-PGI), Sweden (Kalix Löjrom-PDO), Belgium (Jambon d'Ardenne-PGI) and Hungary (Gyulai kolbász or Gyulai pároskolbász-PGI).
The website of the European Commission presents in detail the recipes, the nutrients of the products, their history as well as their production.
Europe is packed with traditions and geographical diversity giving rise to a rich culinary culture. Food and drink products are the result of respected agricultural standards and processes, and the star ingredients used in our inspiring recipes are registered as geographical indications. The EU quality scheme protects the names of these products thanks to their unique characteristics, linked to their geographical origin as well as their particular traditional production process.
