ENEAP – SEAOP: Memorandum of Understanding on the labeling of Nutritional Information and Ingredients of alcoholic beverages sold in the EU
Memorandum of Understanding on the labeling of Nutritional Information and Ingredients of alcoholic beverages sold in the EU
The alcoholic beverages industry has already committed at the European level to offer optimal consumer information
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing for the gradual listing of nutritional information and ingredients of alcoholic beverages sold in the European Union was co-signed by the Association of Alcoholic Beverage Companies (ENEAP) and the Greek Federation of Spirits Producers (SEAOP).
The memorandum, part of the sector's European self-regulatory initiative and implemented by the European Association of Alcoholic Beverage Producers (spiritsEUROPE), aims to strengthen consumer protection, enabling informed decisions about alcohol consumption with the best possible information
Like the other associations that co-signed the document across Europe, ENEAP and SEAOP are committed to encouraging and supporting their member companies with specific directions for implementing the principles provided by the Memorandum, which include:
- Indicating the caloric value (kcal) per 100 ml and per portion on the product label.
- Listing the product's ingredients in a digital environment that is easily and immediately accessible, for example, by creating a bar-code or a QR-code.
- Providing online information on the drink's raw materials, based on its category as determined by the EU legislative framework.
Through this memorandum, companies active in the production and marketing of alcoholic beverages respond to citizens' need to know the caloric value and ingredients of alcoholic beverages. The industry establishes good practices which it voluntarily commits to adhere to, thereby setting a positive example for the wider industry.
