COMPANY HISTORY
1895: Establishment of the company by Basilis Spiliopoulos
1930: Appointment of George Spiliopoulos, son of Basilis Spiliopoulos as managing director
1940: Due to the 2nd World War the company ceases its operations.
1946: The Company restarts operations.
1949: George Spiliopoulos begins a large scale investment program and has new technical equipment installed which increase and modernize production.
1958: The Company changes its legal status from a private company to a PLC. George Spiliopoulos is appointed managing director of the new company.
1959: George Spiliopoulos remains in the forefront of alcohol production and distillation and imports from the French house BARBET and the German house of HERMANN the most technologically advanced distillation columns in order to increase and modernize production and improve the quality of the alcohol produced.
1962: The Company reaches a 10% market share in Greek alcohol sales.
1965-1967: BGS expands its activities by constructing a winery unit for the concentration of grape must and in 1967 it starts producing wine and grape must mainly for overseas markets.
1972: Basilis Spiliopoulos is appointed Chief Executive Officer. The grandson of the founder, following the family tradition.
1975: The winery is extensively modernized following the purchase of a new grape crushing equipment and hydraulic presses.
1980: Basilis Spiliopoulos is appointed Managing Director
1985: The alcohol production facility is completely modernized. New distilling equipment is constructed by the German companies BUCKAU WALTER and KRUPP, and the French SOFAC. These new installations increase both capacity and production. This scale expansion allows BGS to enhance its domestic and European market share.
1990: George Spiliopoulos passes away and his son Basilis Spiliopoulos becomes managing director.
1993: Deregulation of alcohol production and distribution within the European Union.
1995: BGS celebrates its centenary. An extensive modernization program begins. Investments are undertaken to completely modernize the alcohol production. New distillation columns are installed manufactured by the renowned French company INTERIS. Production capacity is tripled.
2001: Further investments are undertaken in order to install equipment that process all the by-products of production. All organic waste produced by the production process are compressed and sold abroad as animal feed.
2004: Launch of NYX Mavrodaphne in the domestic market after its successful introduction in the UK market. George Spiliopoulos, the great grandson of the founder joins the company after a successful career as a securities broker with UBS Investment Bank.
2005 - 2007: BGS plays an important role in the crisis distillation of more than 40,000mt of wine as per European Union regulations, helping relieve the wine market from excess stocks and maintain the income of the grape producers.
2007 - 2010 : BGS decides to move from its existing location to a new location. In addition, BGS decides to undertake the creation of a new bioethanol facility.
